AÂ man who scaled a 12-story construction crane in a bizarre start to the national holiday, Australia Day, has been charged with trespass.
Police were called to a construction site on Stewart Street in Wollongong, Australia about 6.45am on Tuesday, the Illawarra Mercury reports.
They found a 20-year-old man on a chain that stretched from the main body of the tower crane to its boom.
With his hand on the machine, he walked the chain as if it were a tightrope while a small crowd watched with bated breath below.
Wollongong duty officer Dan Richardson said the man wore no safety harness and police were fearful he would fall.
“He wouldn’t have survived a fall,” he said. “After a short period of negotiation he climbed down of his own volition.”
The man appeared disorientated. He was arrested and issued a field court attendance notice for trespass offences, then taken to Wollongong Hospital for medical assessment.
