A huge boiler was inserted by crane into the centre of Peterborough’s new waste incinerator as important developments continue to be made.
The Peterborough Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) will remove 85,000 tons of waste every year and enjoyed a landmark moment when the grate – which is the core part of the combustion process – was installed at the site in the Fengate Industrial Estate where construction began in July 2013.
The facility is expected to be completed by winter next year.
It will divert about 94 per cent of the city’s current landfill waste while generating enough electricity to power around 15 per cent of all of Peterborough homes.
