WINTERS — Two workers helping to construct a new Winters Bridge got killed Friday morning after falling about 80 feet into the bed of Putah Creek.
They fell at about 7 a.m. in a basket that had been hoisted into the air by a crane. Investigators a few hours later had yet to determine the cause of the accident, Winters Fire Chief Aaron McAlister said.
The workers were part of a crew from Disney Construction of Burlingame, McAlister said. The Winters Police Department chaplain came to be with the two men’s 20 co-workers, he said.
The two workers fell on timbers covering a deep hole created for the footings of the new bridge, McAlister said. That created challenges to retrieving the bodies, he said.
The Winters Fire Department, Winters Police Department, Yolo County District Attorney’s Office and the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health sent officials to the accident scene, McAlister said.
Solano County is replacing the 1908 Winters Bridge at a cost of $12.5 million. Workers tore down the old bridge and installed a temporary bridge, allowing them to start creating the foundation system for the new bridge.
