A crane parked Monday morning at St. James Healthcare is used to lift the hospital’s new state-of-the-art 3T MRI unit into place. The 9,000-pound unit when completely installed will weigh 12,000 pounds. The floor had to be reinforced, and a hole cut in the brick wall to move it into place, which is near the Emergency Department and surgery area, according to the hospital. The unit will be able to accommodate larger patients and also be roomier for those patients who don’t like confined spaces. The $2 million project is expected to be fully operational in six weeks.
