American Crane and Rigging, Schenectady, N.Y., recently purchased a WolffKran W8033.20 tower crane from Empire Crane Co. The crane will be used by sister company American Iron Inc. to set 2,100 tons of structural steel on the $120 million addition to the Penn Medicine hospital expansion project in West Chester, Pa.
The tower crane was the ideal solution for the project, as a crawler crane would not be able to access all areas of the jobs. The WolffKran W8033.20 was assembled late last month on the hospital construction site in two days. It has a 300-foot hook height and a 262-foot jib, but the project only required the crane to be set up with a 151-foot tower. “[Wolffkran] tower cranes are the most erector friendly on the market,” said Michael Hoy, owner of American Crane & Rigging and American Iron Inc. “Their assembly is simple and very streamlined.”
The hospital expansion is complete includes a new front entrance, 15 modern operating room suites (three reserved for future growth); three high-tech labs for catheterization and electrophysiology; 10 additional emergency department rooms (eight exams rooms and two trauma bays); new areas for non-invasive cardiology and pre-admission testing; and potentially 99 new inpatient beds. The hospital addition is expected to be complete in 2018.
